A sandy controversy
Those of you who missed fireworks on the 4th may have a second chance, with the California Coastal Commission in town for the radioactive topic of removing off-road vehicles from the Oceano Dunes. [gasp] The 12 commissioners will be in the hot seat deciding how to best uphold their mission to “protect and enhance California’s Coast.” While staff note the dunes serve as a “unique public recreational opportunity,” they also have concerns like air quality, public health, environmental issues and endangered habitat.
When SLO Co considered prohibiting access to off-road vehicles in the early 80’s, it was CA State Parks that received a temp permit to operate with conditions. Since then, it’s been a hot mess. The CCC claim State Parks has failed to resolve problems and seeks less invasive public rec on the beach. This could result in the loss of ~$240 mill annually to SLO Co biz’s. So head to the dunes while you can, and stay tuned for the fireworks show.
