Racism IS a problem.
SLO got shook to its core this week with the painful events surrounding Tuesday’s BLM protest and subsequent arrest of local activist/protester/organizer Tianna Arata and a fellow protester. The protest was in response to Sheriff Parkinson’s comments from a Tea Party event on 7/6, where his musings about the BLM movement culminated in this quote: “I’ve never seen any indication that systemic racism exists in this county.” Hmmm. *Now’s a good time to remind you that the Sheriff is an elected position.* The arrests echo the troubling events happening nationwide when law enforcement interacts with people of color and protesters defending black lives.
If you’re as enraged as we are, do these two things: 1) Help support legal fees for those arrested and bail funds for future arrested protestors, and 2) Email District Attorney Dan Dow with this template asking to drop the charges. * Now’s a good time to remind you that the DA is ALSO an elected position.* Sorry, Sheriff, but SLO is very much a part of the systemic problem. We’ve got work to do.
