Nah, just it’s infinitely useful cousin, hemp
Growing hemp for industrial use (think paper, clothing and cereal) was permitted within SLO County for a hot minute. And we get it – hemp farmers wanna grow their crop and not be treated like drug dealers. The hemp industry could create jobs, bring in new sales tax dollaz, and provide options for ag property owners who don’t want to be the zillionth grape grower or can’t grow cannabis. But alas, the BOS ain’t got time for that. In a 4-1 vote, they enacted a 45-day emergency shut-these-shenanigans-down-for-now ordinance while staff attempts to wrap their heads around that skunkie-unkie smell hemp can create.
Farmers and industry pros alike are frustrated since this “evil weed” isn’t even the stuff that gets you high. Hemp has very low levels of the psychoactive THC, and high levels of CBD, which has health benefits like reducing seizures and relieving pain. We thinks this is looking a lot like classic NIMBY obstruction and decisions have not been finalized just yet. Let the BOS know what you think here.
