Armstrong in hot water over hire
Tongues were waggin’ and eyes were rollin’ after Pres. Armstrong announced on July 1 Cal Poly’s new VP for the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Who they be? Why his former MSU colleague, Paulette Granberry Russell, who headed MSU’s Title IX office, responsible for investigating claims of sexual assault…during the largest sex abuse scandal in collegiate history… involving Larry Nassar. Yea, THAT guy. [facepalms] In 2015, the Dept. of Ed. fined the university $4.5 million for handling those claims too slowly, too secretly and violating Title IX. And isn’t it just a smidge [err MAJORLY] problematic for Armstrong to pull the “emergency hire” card when bringing on such a high profile position like this? Are you there, transparency? It’s me Margaret.
Outrage ensued with an open letter and student-led Change.org petition garnering nearly 12,000 signatures. Bowing to the power of the people, it was announced yesterday she had rescinded the position. Armstrong isn’t exactly apologizing, though. In a campus wide email, he acknowledged that the process was rushed while chiding vile emails, misinformation on social media, and the public rush to judgement. Lesson? Poly has some serious work to do to make campus a more supportive environment for BIPOC students and faculty. Cal Poly Students for Quality Education (SQE) have been leading the charge and need your support now.
