Et tu, SLO?
On the heels of winning 10 national awards from the Kennedy Center for Ghost Ship, Cuesta Drama is en fuego, and now producing the world premiere of a new docu-style play, Behind the Ides from May 3-12. When NYC’s The Public Theatre produced Julius Caesar in 2017 with a Trump-like title character, a firestorm of negative callers and right-wing threats sparked heated conversation about the role and responsibility of art in politics.
After bigwig corps pulled funding (smooth move, Delta & BoA), theatre artists were forced to remind us that Shakespeare doesn’t advocate killing a leader, but exposes how sh*t can hit the fan when power is taken by violence. Behind the Ides takes verbatim calls and voicemails from around the country and forces us to navigate a politically charged climate with art at the helm. Cuesta’s CPAC Supervisor Joan Marie Hurwit makes her SLOcal directing debut, and NYC playwright joins the post-show panel after each performance opening weekend. Tix please!
