Funding for our Fuzz
While some of our nation’s police may get a bad rap, our local force does a damn fine job. But if you’ve ever been to the SLOPD station (no judgement), you know it’s in dire need of a reno. More cramped than a college rental, the headquarters bldg. also boasts leaky ceilings and a strained electrical system. Instead of spending $100k on a mere bandaid, the City’s opting to slate those funds toward a new building. Granted the price-tag of a spankin’ new HQ is expected to be in the $50-60 mill range, but every drop helps, amirite drought gods?
Originally built in 1969, plans to rebuild the current station are 10± years away from reality, and funding is obvi a big question mark on SLOcals minds. The mostly likely source is a potential sales tax increase on the 2020 ballot, and should be aptly named Police HQ 2.0. You’ll be sure to hear more about this before election day, among other things, ahem, on that 2020 ballot, ahem.
