Harvest Time 4 Winos

scoops · November 3, 2016

Gotta taste ‘em all.

It’s time for the annual Harvest on the Coast festival. Winos and foodies unite in Avila to expose their palates to the best of what the Central Coast has to offer. For those of you with tickets to Friday’s sold out winemaker dinner, don’t drink it all because you’ve got two more days to go! There’s still plenty of tickets available for Saturday’s Grand Tasting event. But wait there’s more … keep your entry bracelet for free tastings and live music at all participating wineries on Sunday. #andyouthoughdacubsgaveyouahangover

More startups please!

A new crop of HotHouse Accelerator companies went on display last Wednesday during the Cal Poly CIE event, Crossing the Chasm. Winners from the summer program received $10,000 in seed funding, access to advisors, downtown office space and the chance to validate their business. Pretty much everything short of mom doing their laundry. Wanna give back to the community and these Red Bull-fueled young entrepreneurs? Become a mentor or donate.

Rehab?

scoops · May 19, 2016

Not just for drugs and alcohol!

Habitat for Humanity of SLO will receive a $35,000 grant from the city to help rehab a home on Highland Drive. The happy owner gets a nice new roof, windows, insulation and drainage! Sounds mighty fine, where do I sign up? Nice try… you kinda have to be a low-income senior, so it may be best to check back in a few decades. Fixing up homes is a shift away from Habitat’s mission, but since the cost to build here is so astronomical, they’re trying a new thing: rehab. Sounds like they could use some help.

Showering with a Friend

scoops · May 4, 2016

The next city mandate?

Not so fast. SLO City Council is standing up for their “secure and diversified future water supply” after a front page article in the Tribune gave prominence to a group of locals who urged the city council to consider a two-year moratorium on new development and asked for larger study to assess this city’s future water supplies.

To show they’re not gonna take it, no, they’re not gonna take it, the City released this 14-page thing, assuring residents about the city’s future water supply, and trying to assuage fears that new development could be halted for two years. SLO Councilmember Carlyn Christianson called the moratorium request “fear-mongering at its worst”.

Let Jan Marx and the council know what you think about water, development… or showering with a friend here

Rent is Too Damn High!

SLO U40 Rental Housing Inspection Forum.

Renting in SLO? We know, bring back that guy from the last election. He’d be better than Trump. Anyway, this is important for renters and landlords in SLO. The city wants to make things safer by inspecting all rentals. Sounds good, but is it? Find out on May 11th at 6PM at The Embassy Suites. And since you don’t have time to summarize for everyone else, RSVP & bring a friend.

Lengthy Permitting Woes for Local Business.

Anyone who appreciates a fine craft cocktail in SLO has probably heard of Sidecar on 1127 Broad St. The local gastropub has been waiting over 13 months for their permit to be issued to expand into the space next door. The delay is costing the business a pretty penny since they’re paying rent (which is too damn high, of course) for both spaces. Wanna help? Do it before the ice melts.
