& we thought Jerry Brown had carbon balls
California’s new headline-grabbing goal is to be carbon neutral by 2045. Not to be outdone, but SLO just called their moonshot: citywide carbon neutrality by 2035. It’s an ambitious aim (perhaps the most in the world) and one that the city staff and SLO Climate Coalition now needs to back up with real plans and action. This council, led by progressive Mayor Harmon, has cajones. They have planted a stake in the ground to protect future generations from climate change, and inspire others to do the same.
Council also approved a Community Choice Energy program, where PG&E customers get to choose where their energy comes from, to help make the goal happen. How, you ask? By removing all carbon from the electrical grid in 2020, and then electrifying transportation and buildings and, well, pretty much everything else. Hope for the planet begins with Cali’s own damn satellite… and SLO leads the charge!
